I just got a message from Nikon in my mailbox officially introducing the D50
and the D70s. I guess the rest will depend on the pricing, and whether they
can go head to head with Canon. I can see a lot of newbies jumping on the
D50, simply because it's a Nikon, but I can't see a lot of people trading in
their D70 for a D70s. If the price on the D70 drops to clear inventory it
could be an incredible bargain, IMO.

What's your opinion?

Disappointed. Nikon is still playing catch-up with Canon. I'm
contemplating the jump from my Sony 828 to a DSLR, and the choice for me is
350D vs 20D.

Why would they when the'll just be able to do a firmware upgrade that'll
give them a lot of what the D70s has to offer?

Hacked or provided by Nikon?

Go Minolta instead. You'll always have A/S regardless of lens.

Provided by Nikon. It's already on the site. You don't get the larger
screen or faster shooting speed, but everything else is there. Makes a used
N-70 look very appealing.

(Answering myself:)

* Improved performance for the 5-area autofocus system's Dynamic Area
AF and Closest Subject Priority Dynamic Area AF modes.

* Updated menus with a new design similar to that of the D70s, making
them easier to view and quicker to recognize.

* Added in-camera page setup support for PictBridge compatible
printers.

D70 firmware should be available mid May.

Are there any actual *clues* about what the improved performance of
the 5-area autofocus system might be? This is the one and only
thing in the firmware upgrade list that is even slightly interresting.

Improved follow-focus is mentioned.

Provided by Nikon, as announced at the same time as the D50, and D70s

So we get everything except the larger LCD and the cable release? I can
live with that, although the cable release would be nice. :-) I'm still
waiting for my infrared remote. Seem to be backordered everywhere.

I have about 2 dozen ML-L3 on my shelf at the store I work at in Ottawa,
Canada... I also have the AS-15 in stock.

You can get a cable release retrofitted into a D70, for $185 (for a Canon
RS-60E3 remote), see http://www.harbortronics.com/Services.asp. You get a
$50 discount if you have the retrofit done when you purchase a vertical grip
for the D70 (though they seem to be perpetually back-ordered).

That'd be my third choice, behind Canon and Nikon. And maybe Olympus.

I'm considering trading my D70 for a Leica M6 with three Leitz lenses. No,
I'm not joking...

Well there are two options...the cutting edge that becomes outdated much
more quickly as in the Canon route, or the Nikon route which takes
longer to develop, but when they do release it's excellent, and your
gear keeps it's value longer due to longer product cycles. I think it's
amazing my D70 which I purchased a year ago is still basically current.
It has paid for itself many, many times. Now if they just release the
D90 or D200 or whatever they call it and fill the gap between the D70
and D2 series....

They both use the same firmware B1.0.3 and that has been around since
Jaunary.
