V-sync really slows down my game in FIFA 12. My frame rates go as low as 40Fps. but when i turn it off, my average is 60. is that normal? What is v-sync for?

More about : sync

Web search and you shall find.

Short way, it syncs the frame rates to your monitor refresh rate to prevent a tearing effect. It does cause frame rates to drop at times though. Turn it off it the game looks fine without it.

fifa 12 looks bad without it though my frame rates are much stable without it. Could it be possible that the game itself is the problem?

If you enable vsync on a 60 hz monitor you will only get fps in integer divisions of the max refresh rate. 60, 30, 20, 15, 12, 10 fps, etc. Without vsync your graphics card will put out as many fps as possible and may cause a tearing effect.

Each graphic engine will run differently with V Sync, so don't know if it's a "problem" or just how the game is. Check for any patches for it maybe, so some looking on the game support site also.

I agree with this and depending on the game sometimes you can get away without running v-sync

Spot on. there are some other small factors that can have an effect but this is what is happening.

I maxed everything in the "3D Performance settings" in my Catalyst Control Center and FIFA 12 is now running fine in maxed out settings. Thank you so much guys for your inputs! I appreciate it!
