I have recently installed a USB 2.0 port in the back of
my computer. It seemed to install fine, the computer
detects the USB 2.0 ports under the drivers list, but
whenever I plug anything into them, they don't work. For
example, if I put my iPod docking station in, it won't
sync and iTunes never notices it. Also, if I plug my
external DVD RW drive in it, the drive doesn't show up. I
have also tried installing two different notebook USB 2.0
cards on my laptop, but both of them have had the same
problem as the one for my desktop is having. I got both
of the computers around 3-2 years ago and both are
Windows XP.

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how to
fix it? Or, is there something about older computers to
where they aren't compatible with USB 2.0?

What is SP1?

Also, whenever I plus something into it, a message pops
up about a minute later saying Windows has finished
installing something for the hardware and it needs to
restart, but last time I restarted, I got a blue screen
saying there was an error.

SP1 includes the drivers for USB2.0
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

I can't diagnose your BSOD without your telling us what the error message
is!
