Hi Guys,

I am looking to upgrade parts in my desktop I built several years ago. It will be a moderate upgrade.

Current:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core
ASUS M4N68T-M V2 (crappy replacement mobo I got when my original failed)
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
HIS H465FS512P Radeon HD 4650 512MB

Prospective:

ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

or

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

----------

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

or

AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

-----------

I already have G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 but it didn't work in my current build, something about my cpu memory controller or something. I can use it with new stuff.

Not sure if I want to upgrade video card. If I do, it would be $100 max. Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The 965 is pretty good. I wouldn't go for the new FX.

The fx 6300 is $29 more than the 6100 and 10% faster well worth it.

Definitely, I meant to say newer FX I guess. Piledriver is the better answer.

The Gigabyte seems expensive. See if you can get an Extreme4 ASRock.

What is the difference between extreme3 and extreme4? I will keep an eye on both.

Well, there probably isnt that much of a difference but a few features.

So, in a sense, go for the Extreme3.
