Ok here's the deal, I've got a friend who seems to belive that anything with the 3Dfx logo on it is superior to anything else out there. I of course disagree and would like some info (reviews, benchmarks etc) on the subject.

actually i agree with him.
they might be slower than todays stuff but the driver quality, image quality was the best IMO and the speed was up to par with what you needed when the cards were released.
I'd rather have a V5 than a GTS, I use a GTS BTW. but when your comparing a TI500 to a V5 of course there is no comparison they are different generation products.

So you would like to use a crippled card based on the
VSA-100 chip with no T&L.....Okay Dokay
But I do agree with you that the anti-aliasing was better on the V5 than the GTS.

Static T&L is practically useless anyway.

Very good point by AMD Man. Hardwired TnL like the Geforce 2 and 1 series offers is useless in DX8 games. Only programmable TnL like the Geforce 3 cards are useful, or will most likely be used in the future to any extent.

All GF2 cards perform nearly identical in a DX8 game like Aquanox, only the programmable TnL of the GF3 helps matters in games based on DX8 because developers are odviously not taking advantage of both static and programmable TnL.

Since all non programmable TnL cards default to software TnL the V5 has an equal in DX8 games, top that with the image quality and FSAA and you have a card that is superior to its nvidia counterparts of the day.

I would have to say that the GF3 is better but thats not much to throw in your buddys face, its like comparing my GTS to a Matrox Mystique (ok not quite that bad!) but you get my point, different generations.

Hmmm well if your implying that the GTS had no FSAA then you haven't heard of Supersampling. Of course it wasn't fully utilizied until the 5.22's came out but it was present none the less. Second about the T&L I guess you haven't heard of MDK2 with a Geforce 2 GTS scoring 160-184 percent better than the V5.

I shouldn't honor that with a response but yes I know about the advantages (of the games I can count on one hand...) of second generation TnL but its not really worth it for a game like MDK2...

I don't think I was implying that the GTS that I own and use doesn't have FSAA... lol.

The image quality in both 2D and 3D are superior on a V5. The FSAA quality is superior on the V5.

All I said is that I think these factors IMHO make that card superior to the GTS because the GTS just doesn't have enough (the speed and TnL) to make it a better card. Its a shame the company isn't around anymore because I think they did have better products while they were competing.

Well first off my other posts were not ment to be offensive or mean. Second I know many people (one of them being the person I referred to in my original post) that know alot about computers in general but know very little about graphics cards that they own and use. I will however agree that the image quality of the Voodoo 5 in 2D is superior to that of the GTS. But I disagree with your comment of,

"the GTS just doesn't have enough (the speed and TnL) to make it a better card"

Now unless I have taken this out of context (and if I have I apoligize) your quite wrong about the speed issue. The GTS matches and in almost all cases exceeds the Voodoo 5 in FPS.

Yeah no problem, sometimes I take offense to quickly and easily. Hard to read people on here effectively (maybe I should quit my day job)?

About the speed I agree with you, I meant that the GTS is faster, the static TnL is still nice also. I meant that those qualitys don't encourage me enough to give the GTS higher marks over a V5.

I use a GTS myself over a V5 because the card is discontinued.. lol.

So in effect I'm arguing a moot point.

I guess the motto should be, they were good in their day, to some the best and now are better off forgotten how we used to get consistant quality from 3dfx cuz with my new nvidia, my high res desktop is making my eyes blur!!

Actually it really is!
LOL.

Sorry about the confusion in other posts. And yea I still do agree that for some reason the 2D desktops with a
Voodoo 5 to look quite better than those on a Geforce 2.
Thanks for the debate

I was a faithful 3dfx voodoo man from 2, 3 and 5 having switched over from the ATI rage fury. Voodoo 5 was a very fine card. The demise of 3dfx and the lack of driver updating made it similar to carrying a knife to a gun fight.
Nvidia enjoys the same position 3dfx once had. Let that be a lesson to them...keep making the best products or get ready to be a foot note in computer lore.
