Get the 7970. It is better for gaming because it gets higher fps in video games. Also it is at the next higher on tomshardware's gpu hierarchy.

Idk if that was the one you were looking at, but that 7970 is an awesome deal.

7970 GHZ Edition.
The only comparable Nvidia card currently is the GTX 680.
Also, Nvidia cards are optimized for gaming, whereas AMD cards also have raw power. Proof- any bit miner client.

Can that still be said for amd and nvidia still? This is just a question because if you noticed, this year cuda cores have seemed to get A LOT weaker and stream processors have gotten a lot stronger.

Anandtech's Benchmarks showing the 7970 (non ghz ed) beating the 670 except for BF3, Portal 2 & Batman which all Nvidia GPU's play better on than there AMD counterparts.

Showing that the 7970 & 670 are tied in overall performance but the 7970 ghz edition pulls slightly ahead of the 680.

It really depends on what you're playing. If you love Battlefield 3 and the Batman games (both run better on Nvidia) then you will be happier with the GTX 670. If, however, you don't play just those three games, then get the 7970 or 7970 Ghz Edition like lt_dan_zsu and Nanzer said.

To throw a little fuel on the fire, a little pricing comparison:

EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2gb $370 after MIR
PowerColor 7970 3gb $390
Gigabyte 7970 "Ghz Edi." 3gb $420 after MIR
EVGA GTX 670 FTW 4gb $430 after MIR
EVGA GTX 680 2gb $$450 after MIR

the ghz edition scores slightly worse, less than one frame, I would say that trade is worth it to score at 680 levels in almost every other game.

What amazes me is the power consumption of the AMD cards. The 7970 Ghz Edi uses 10 less watts at idle than the 670 but almost 80 watts more at full load. Nvidia is doing some great things keeping the power down. Now if they would just fix their memory bandwidth on the mid range cards (I'm looking at you 650 Ti & 660 Ti) they would be so much better.
