I'm running XP Professional and at certain intervals the system starts
running diagnostics. It really messes me up when playing ET. Any way to
disable this during gameplay?

On Win2000 it's in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to
turn off stuff like Indexing Service (which is useless, IMO). I don't
know how you can turn it off only when playing though.

There are a number of XP and Win2000 services that you safely can disable,
both for security and performance. I came across this page yesterday (from
slaspot):

have fun
