Mysterious Arial Bombardment

I was playing Allied in the Fuel Depot map. Right in the area where the
tank originates was a constant barrage of arial bombs but never a smoke
grenade in sight. After biting it about six times I jumped to Spectator
mode and searched the area then perched myself as high above the area as
possible and saw no enemy in the area. I watched as the Allied team finally
got the tank moved somewhat out of the area and it stopped whenever no
players were in the area. As soon as someone would spawn in the cabin, it
started again.

I've ruled out mortars as these repeated rapidly and in a wide pattern.
Could this be some admin's idea of fun?

It's obviously Artillery being called in by an Axis field ops. Are you
new to the game?

Not so new that I don't know what the trail of the Artillery smoke grenade
looks like. (There were none, as I said.) And that even with decent XP after
tossing two or three of those in a row you have to wait to regain your
strength before you can toss another. (Not to mention that you would have
to go obtain more.)

These things were just going off in rapid succession for the entire time
anyone was near the spawn area. Is there a way beside the smoke grenade to
call in Artillery?

You're mistaken. See below.

You're mistaken. You don't "toss" artillery at all, and you don't have to
"obtain more". See below.

OK, so you are new to the game after all. Here's the deal:

1. Smoke grenade calls in an AIRSTRIKE. Not that this word is different
than ARTILLERY. Not the same thing at all. The smoke is a marker for the
incoming aircraft to know where to drop their load of bombs. 2. The
artillery is called in by a Field Ops, by looking at the desired impact
point with his binoculars, and pressing the "fire" button. There is
nothing tossed at all. It does require a wait period to recharge after
doing this, but you don't have to go "obtain" anything. When you are
recharged, you can do it again. Artillery is long range shelling action,
fired from somewhere far away, not by aircraft.

If you get two Field Ops players who know what they're doing, they can
keep a continuous barrage of Artillery on a spot, by alternating the
firing between them, and recharging while the other player fires.

Does that clear things up for ya?

And there's still a puff of smoke when artillery is called in.

Was it a short burst (or two) of explosions in a line, or a sequence
of explosions around an area? The former is an airstrike, the latter
is artillery.

Clearly there are way more nuances in this game than I could possible have
imagined. Thanks for the education.

Well, yeah, I knew that. Perhaps you meant to reply to Ozzie...?

I probably should have, or at least made clear the question was
directed at Ozzie.

be nice Dan...you were a n00b too, at one time! ;^)

9months 3days and 10:20hours ago I quit smoking the dang thangs, 3,884

$534.05 Scotch Whiskey money saved, 1weeks 6days 11:40hours Vulcan riding

In my opinion, Cingular Wireless Service is the worst cell phone company in
the world. I have never had to yell so much at "service" reps in my life. In
my opinion, their billing practices and fees are predatory and punitive, and
they do not deal in good faith.

Not sure, but I didn't think Dan was being harsh, just informative to a
noob. Unless I missed something.

Not at all. Just answering your question, rather well I thought. I guess
Capt Walt needs a little caffeine, maybe... :)

That's great! Got almost 8 months myself (last New Year's Eve was the
last one I had). Very glad I did it, after 20 years of smoking 'em.

Yeah, in the last 9 months, I think I've had 6 smokes...I don't spend 20
minutes coughing my guts out every morning, and i feel like I might make 55
years...maybe!
