The only way I can get the ethernet cable from my modem to detect a signal and work is if I plug it into a ethernet outlet rather than the reg place designated for the cable. It was working for over a year, but now it has stopped. I have tried everthing I know.

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

What type of cable is it that handles the uplink from the MODEM - Cat 5 or 6?
