I hope this is not an improper post. I would appreciate any
suggestions for the best internet vendor (price-wise) for a Canon
Digital Rebel XT and the 17-85MM F4-5.6 EF-S IS USM AF zoom lens.

I've been lurking for a while, and this seems to be the best
all-around combo for entering the digital SLR market.

Feel free to email me, if you prefer not to post here, and a big
retroactive thanks to all who haved weighed in on the various issues
of this equipment.

If you are merely looking for "cheap", then there are a whole lot of
questionable options which I wouldn't consider for a moment. But if you
are looking for good value and reliability, then B&H probably tops the
list.

As for the 17-85MM F4-5.6 EF-S IS USM, it's sort of expensive for what
you get; and not really all that superior to the kit lens. I have the
kit lens (as well as a 70-200 2.8L IS), and in all fairness the kit lens
makes for a really good wide angle lens; and other than in low-light
situations, does a rather good job when closed down a couple of stops.

There are two I like
http://bhphotovideo.com/

http://buydig.com/

The former I prefer for top notch customer service and reputation.

The latter I haven't been able to pass up for several point and shoots
and even my 300D body because their prices are so aggressive, and I've
had good experiences every time.

I've just done a transaction with http://www.onecall.com where the
prices were lower than most and service was quick and thoughtful.
Delivery was promised for Wednesday, the parcel arrived Tuesday,
complete and safe.

The best internet shops for anything are Newegg and BH Photo&Video.

They are rarely the cheapest quoted price, but they are quick, accurate,
and reliable.

Add www.adorama.com to that list. And buydig has a another outfit
called www.BeachCamera.com.

Seconded, and if my co-workers were posting, thirded and
fourthed. We've all had extremely good experiences with them ordering our
Digital Rebels (1x 350, 2x 300). I know that one of those orders was
ordered at ~7pm one day and arrived by 10am the next morning...

I really like www.canogacamera.com, prices aren't the best but the service
is. For general stuff I'm not a fan of newegg, mostly because of their
website and ordering process.

I don't get it. You go to Newegg's website, pick out what you want,
submit the order, and it arrives the day after tomorrow. What's not to
like?

You forgot to mention the need to wear an aluminum foil hat when ordering
from Newegg to avoid the mind-control emanations broadcast from their
website. Other than that, they're fine.

Their categorization and search indexing are horrible, if you are looking
for a hard to find item it's impossible find even if they carry it. And I
basically can't stand their layout.

Their ordering process requires a username and password. That annoys me if
I'm only going to be ordering from them once. And they have a bogus $2.99
expediting fee which did nothing for me the one and only time I used them.
My item still shipped 3 days late even though the items were supposedly in
stock.
