Hey,

So I am looking to buy a AMD gpu because there so much cheaper than Nvidia, when I was looking at nvidia range I was going to get the gtx 670, which AMD card will match that? I plan to play games on max like battlefield 3 ect.

When I look at the specs, amd 7970 mhz clock speed is around 800 where gtx 670 is in the 1000s

The clock speed does not determine the superior card because the two use two entirely different architectures. It's like comparing apple's to oranges. Also the 7970 has more OC headroom, it's what I would grab too.

There are many factors that influence graphics card performance and you should not focus purely on the clock speed numbers. Nvidia and AMD also have different architectures.

There are also higher clocked AMD cards available to buy which extends performance leads over a 670. You will pay a premium for that or you can overclock that Sapphire card. It has a good cooling assembly as is.

You must look at benchmarks. Clock speed, number of processors etc are irrelevant between architectures.

Besides you can over clock a 7970 to a gigahertz our just buy a gigahertz edition.

XFX make good cards with excellent cooling as well. I, personally, am not a fan of their cards but their coolers are good and do look spiffy. It would be a good purchase.
