Hey guys, my computer froze up last night, and upon restarting, the monitor would not receive signal.
After restarting many times and messing around with the power cycling, resetting CMOS etc, I got signal back intermittently but the system freezes at fairly random times during boot. Sometimes it would get further than others, but never past the start of the Windows loading screen. Usually what it would do is either freeze during the Mobo logo screen, or just not show anything on the display at all (this is most common result actually)
When nothing shows on display, there is no POST. When there is a POST, it usually freezes within 10-20 seconds after that. Hardly enough time for me to even mess around with BIOS settings.
Also, it became apparent that the longer the computer was left off, the further it would get before freezing and the more likely the display would be to come on (this is probably why I got display back after messing around with stuff). Does that mean the problem could be the GPU overheating? One time after many reboot attempts it did feel quite warm to the touch, but I'm not sure what it would typically feel like.
Anyway, to make a long story shorter, I started testing and swapping out various components, and when I tried a different video card everything worked fine, so it seems to me that the issue is with my GPU
I'll order a new card if I have to (have my eye on GTX 670), but before I do I just wanted to check with you guys to see if anyone has any ideas I should try or if there's something more simple that I'm overlooking. I'm not hopeful, but then I don't really know a lot about this stuff. I was probably going to build a whole new system in a year or so, so I'd actually prefer to hold off on a new video card until then if possible.
P.S. There's no graphical artificats or any sort of graphical oddity when the display does show. But again, most of the time the display just never comes on. When the compjuter freezes, the display stays on until I restart. Don't know what to make of that, but I just want to include as much relevant info as possible.
EDIT: Realized I forgot to talk about power supply. That remains untested, but the card I switched with (which worked) was a Radeon 5870 so I think the power requirement should be similar to my gtx 280?
