Can't copy, but can read!?

Hi guys, i have a Pioneer 16x DVD 116 tray drive. The thing is, i've had problems burning and/or copying the content of certain burnt discs.

For example, i grabbed about 15 DivX cds off of a friend. I could copy the first 6 of them over to hard drive no problems. But the rest i couldn't copy to hard drive. It would take for ever (20mins), and when it did finish....the file wasn't recognised by media player. I also couldn't burn these CDs as the burn process would fail on the reading end.

The first 6 cds are a different brand to the last ones. The weird thing is, i can still watch the movie on those remaining CD-Rs. I just can't copy or burn them. What the hell is up with that!?

Most likely the media isn't compatible with your DVD drive. It happens. Just make sure you don't buy that brand when you grab some blank discs.

So you think it wouldn't be a fault with my DVD Player?
The thing that stumps me is that i can acutally play the divx movies on those incompatible CDs....i just can't copy them to hard drive or burn them. Can you explain why or is this thing going to remain a mystery?

Oh, you can play them off the CD?
That's different then. I don't know what's going on.

This might be a silly question, but is there any kind of security encryption or something like that on them?

Wabbit season! Duck season! AMD season! INTEL season!
Hmmmph--whatever...

Doubt it, i'm burning them off of a friend who burnt them off of someone else. The first half of them are fine, but the second half are on different CDRs to the first. And that's when the trouble starts.

As I understand it, you can't copy the CD's using the Pioneer. If you try to copy the CD's from the DVD to your CD-RW, the burning process fails, either on-the-fly, or as an image from the hard drive. And you can't drag-&-drop the files to the hard drive from the Pioneer. And only with that particular media. Is that right?

What kind of CD-RW do you have, and what is your burning software?

It sounds like the files are getting corrupted, and that's why the Media Player can't play them. Since your DVD can play the movies, it doesn't sound like a media incompatibility, or a problem with a missing codec.

You might need a different software program to burn the image to the drive, in order to make a perfect image.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. The only thing i can do with that particular media is play the Divx fromt the CD. Anything else i do results in failure. I have an old Sony 4x burner. The software i'm using is Roxio CD Creater 5. The problem doesn't seem to be on the burning end at all though, just my pioneer DVD. During a burn it will fail during the reading process. I still don't get why i can watch the divx from the cd though....

My suggestion would be that you leave the DVD out of the burning process altogether. Use the CD-RW to create the image, place it on the hard drive, and then burn the image to CD.

There are other kinds of software besides EZ CD Creator that can be useful in a situation like this, like the Blind Read/Write Suite, CloneCD, etc. The burning software you are using has some limitations, and one of those is in making a viable image of a disk.

If you'd like some links to different kinds of software, IM me.

That's a good idea actually. It sux that my Burner is 8X read :) Oh well.

Yeah i've tried clone cd...and my burner is not supported. I've tried blind read/write suit too with some problems. Nero is one that does work though.

Cheers for the offer of links....i'll get back to you if i need them.

I don't think it has anything to do with my burning software. The fact is that i can play the divx movie from the cd. But when i try to copy the file to hardrive, it stuffs up. I don't even have to use my burner to get this problem occuring. And it seems to be media specific. I just want to know how its possible to watch the DivX movie, but not be able to copy it to harddrive.

Is that a CD-RW upgrade I smell, or is someone outside burning AOL disks in the leaf barrel again?
