Is a Philips AE 5.1 overkill?

ok, Im thinkin it is now, and seeing as im getting a 2.1 system (Altec Lansing ATP3 3 piece), perhaps i should get a cheaper card?
But its really good...argh!

Any Ideas, comments, etc?

no, It's not overkill. Maybe in the future you'll want to upgrade your speaker system. I'd get the Phillips AE 5.1 now and not worry about upgrades in the future.

True, but wont it be by that time (0.5-1-2yrs?) obsilete?,
Sound cards (or anything for that matter) from 1-2 years ago cant compare to the technology now, theres no reason not to think that will happen again (possibly quicker now than before).

I agree sound technology progresses a lot slower than many parts of computer. I brought my SB Live about 3 and half years ago.
I would suggest you get Audigy instead of Philips AE 5.1. Audigy just come out with new feature that are not availible on other card yet. The new feature are going to be supported in the future by game manfacturers.
