I wonder whose sensor they are using? 10 megapixels.
Anyway, the camera really is a drool-inducing machine.
I read some posts on a Leica group and I have never
seen people who believe in their cameras, especially
the lenses more than they do.

Anyone know the price of the unit? ($ or £)

Not available yet. According to a local store, the back alone will be
CAD$4000. (For the R8 and R9). The sensor is 10 Mpix and 1.3 crop
factor so very intriguing.

There's little doubt about the quality of Leica optics, but many of the
Leicaphiles "got religion" too and it can get pretty tedious.
Fortunately for the Leicaphiles (and the rest of us) there are some who
actually make great photography with the cameras as well as just talk
about how great they are.
The R8 and R9 are very competent SLR's, but the Maxxum 9, EOS-1n/1v and
Nikon F4/F5 are much better system cameras.
The R9 with a 10 Mpix, 1.3 cropped dig sensor is a fantastic package,
OTOH given the flexibilty of film and digital. Masterpiece. If I had
the bucks to buy it and the SLR and some lenses I'd be very tempted.
Don't have the bucks. I do hope this is enough to dig Leica out of
their current money pit.

About CAD$4000 (for the back only) according to a Leica distributor I
asked yesterday. (Also my E-6 and digital print lab).

If only Leica was autofocus it would be a killer combo.

When I first got an AF SLR ('94) I used AF 99.99% of the time.
Over the years I've slid towards the opposite pole. In large part this
has been due to the Maxxum 9 which has a very bright viewfinder,
possibly the brightest of all SLR's. Coupled with fast glass (my lenses
are f/2.8 or faster), the view is always bright and contrasty in most
conditions allowing for accurate focus.
Given the prime lenses (and a few zooms) for the R8/R9 that are
available, I would bet that manual focus with them is a snap.

For many (most?) no doubt it is. I used to shoot manual focus 95% of the
time. However, in the past 5 years I've found my eye sight getting
poorer - i couldn't focus well in low light. So a few years ago I
switched AF.

I imagine in another 10 to 20 years I'll probably be in the same boat.
