Why the lack of widescreens?

There are a few widescreen 17" flat panels but not many above that - and very few worth the money. I think wider is better, and I can't see why it would be any more expensive to manufacture a flat panel in a different aspect ratio... Any thoughts on what's holding manufacturers back?

Wide screen resolutions arent widely supported in software as of yet, as the 16:9 screens have traditionally been meant more for movie viewing.
