I am considering going way over my budget and purchasing a KM7D for the
figure skating photography I do......but it's absolutely essential that
the camera be compatible with my Sigma 70-210/2.8 zoom lens. I've been
researching this everywhere online with no results yet though I did
email Sigma information (and haven't heard from them). Anyone have a KM
Maxxum 7D with this lens who can respond?

Apparently this Sigma lens which I bought three years ago was replaced
with the 70-200 and I don't know if compatibility issues for the 70-200
will be the same for the 210.

Also if I had to get Sigma to replace the chip - would this necessarily
interfere with the lens compatibility with my regular Minolta 7 SLR?
I'd want to be able to use the lens for both cameras.

THANKS in advance.

Tracy

Take the lens with you when you visit your local camera store.

I have both but did not try yet.

I have used the 70-210/2.8 with my 600si without any prob, but compatibility
with my 9xi was far from perfect.

I will try with the 7D.

Are there any compatibility issues between 70-200 and 7D ?

I am daily using my Sigma 28-70/2.8 with my 7D, no problem so far.

No direct experience with that combo.

I've seen the odd mention of compatibilty problems between the 7D and
some Sigma lenses. I suggest you post the same message in the K-M SLR
forum at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1035 for
which you will have to register with dpreview (no big deal). Likewise
in the yahoo forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Minolta/ .

I would bet that if it works well with the 7, it will work fine with the 7D.

Find a local store that has one in stock (or a local photog), drag your
lens over and test it. Be sure to test it with AS off, and with AS on.

I have the 7D, BTW, and it was an effortless transition from the Maxxum 9.

Cheers,
Alan.

Ok, replying to myself, I took time last week end to try the 70-210/2.8 with
the 7D, no problem, works fine.

Of course, the AF is not lightning fast, but it works.

Since Minolta's AF motor is in the body, the gear ratios and resistance
in the lens are responsible for how fast or slow AF is achieved.

The Maxxum 80-200 f/2.8 G autofocuses very fast on the Maxxum 9 and 7D.
I'm sure there are faster, but end to end AF is about 1/4 second by my
reckoning.

IAC, I usually manually focus, which is too 'quick and slick' on this
lens. I'd rather a longer turn with more tactile resistance. (The 100
f/2.8 macro is great in this respect).

Cheers,
Alan
