Can you take your old computer hardware to (shop) chips

There is this shop in the UK called "chips" and I think they advertise that you can bring in old computer hardware to them. I have an ATI 4870. It's sort of functional but it crashes from time to time so I don't want to sell it on eBay. The thing is that I don't know if its really true if chips take in computer hardware, or whether they take in half functional, partially faulty computer hardware. I don't care about making a profit, I just want to see the hardware looked after or disposed of correctly. Is there anything else I can do with old partially working hardware? Other than take it to the dump?
