MotherBoard maximum memory

I am planning on building a computer and was wondering does the maximum memory for a motherboard include all memory or just the RAM on the motherboard. for instance if I had a maximum memory of 8 gigs and had a 2 gig video card could I use 8 gigs ram or could i only use 6.

Max memory refers to RAM and RAM only. Not VRAM.
