I picked up a copy of Half Life (game of the year edition) and am having some problems. I can't even play TFC (i.e., "Start new game" & "Load game" options are grayed out and neither option can be chosen). In Half Life, I've reached the point (early in game) where I'm heading up the elevator to go outside. As I head up, I get the loading screen. After that, the game resumes and I can hear helicopters outside. The problem is that at that point I can't move, crouch, jump. I can fire my weapons. Also, the HEV suit power starts dropping, and when it reaches zero, then my life meter starts dropping, until I die. It's weird 'cause it's not like the game "locks up", "crashes", or anything. The other weird thing is that if I quit the current game and then try to reload, then the game locks up and won't finish loading, and I'm forced to reboot. Also, after the aforementioned problems, Zone Alarm won't run, and I have to reboot to run Zone Alarm.
Things I've tried: Uninstalled and reinstalled, updated to version 1107, tried in OGL and D3D. I've also been playing the "They Hunger" mod without problem (yet, anyway; I'm still in the begining parts).
What can I try? :frown:

Well TFC is multiplayer, so u can't start a new game. Now having beaten HL many a time, I have experienced teh problem w/ teh elevator numerous times. It's just a bug, and will keep on happening. The trick is that just before it says loading you jump, so that you are in mid air while it's loading. That will do the trick. Another tip is that before you go on an elevator, quick save so that if teh same happens and u die, u won't have to do everything again from teh last time you saved. Enjoy half life- it's a great game.

Oh yeah, and about teh lockin up- it just happens. There isn;t much you can do about it. Happens on my 200MHz and my 1.2 Ghz /w a Gf3.

Tell me if it works- it should, but if it doesn't I'll experiment a little.

Tried your idea and it worked! I was stoked, until I realized that for some reason, now the movement is all weird. It's like the character is drunk! Mouse movements are exaggerated (i.e. If I want to look left my view shifts right just a little, then whips around to the left further than I intended. If I want to walk, there's a delay between pressing "w" and beginning to walk, and suddenly I'm darting across the room right into enemy fire!)
I'll keep experimenting, at least I'm onto something!
Any other bugs in the game that I should know about?

Sounds like you're at too low FPS. What are your settings, and what's your computer's hardware?

OK... After playing around with various settings and not getting anywhere, I set everything back to my original settings. I thought, well, I'll try this one more time, then, if it doesn't work, I'll just start again from the beginning. Suddenly it works! I have no idea why.
I've also just discovered that lamer gamers get their asses kicked by the military guys that show up when you get off the elevator!
btw- How do you find fps for HL?

For CS, type net_graph 3 in console.

That should display your fps as well as other net stats.

I got the "drunk" problem (I play counterstrike), and it happened at any res higher than 1024- until I changed vid mode to open gl, now its fine, you may want to try that.
