40Go on a P1-100MHZ?

Hi everybody. I've bought a new Hard Drive, a Maxtor 40Go, 5400 rpm. I tried to install it on my old P1-100Mhz (I wanted to use it as my second computer for storage purpose only. It would be connect to my 1Ghz Thunderbird with a cross-cable) and the computer sees it as a 8.55 Go Hard Disk. My questions:

1-Is a P1-100MHZ limited in terms of the size of the hard disk he can accept? Is there a limit?

2-If there's no Hard disk space limitation, how can I make my P1 detect my hard disk as a 40Go instead of a 8.55 Go? (that's a big loss of memory)

I thank you all! :)

You maybe limited to 8gb because of your bios only supporting 8gb... Check the hard drive manual, it should say something about it. Also what os are u using, or more importantly what format are using i.e. fat16, fat32, or ntfs

Well, actually, there's no Os installed yet. I don't know if my bios accept 40Go Hard disks...that might be the problem....

Usually the drive manufacturer will have a utility to enable you to use their HDD.

There is indeed a utility for enabling the use of high capacity DD with older bioses.
I have used "EZ bios" from WD with a triton 2 chipset (socket 7) and the full capacity of the DD was recognized.
Not that much slower i suspect either.

a lot of older boards fail to recognise larger drives, there may by a bios flash but I wouldnt hold much hope.
