If I buy a SB Live 5.1 card and SB´s speaker setup for 5.1 sound, how good is the quality?, how "loud" can it play?
Is it any idea to use this solution if I want to watch DVD movies with surround? or do I have to buy a standard 5.1 amplifier?
I know this "sound thing" is individual, but I just want an idea...
Thanks.
well, im sure it will be "loud" but that isnt necessarily good... planes are loud... so are jackhammers. if i were you, id make sure i dont have a via chipset on my mobo first, and if you dont, and are dead set on the sb, id go with the thx certified klipsch pro media speakers.
Ok, I do have the VIA chipset, bad eh?
Well, it don´t have to be a SB card and speakers, It´s just the only brand I have found that are cheap, I have a very limited budget at the moment.
Do you have a "favourite" soundcard that you could recommend?
oh, good/bad seems to be a matter of opinion, but the fact is that sb cards have been found to be problematic when used with the kt133a chipset (specifically the 686b southbridge i believe) dont get me wrong, it can be done... i have the chipset in question and the sb live platinum with no problems, but it took a while to get there. you should check the post on this same page by crashman... he and fatburger (phatburger) have picked up some cheap (inexpensive) aureal cards. the quality seems to be very high but i dont have any personal experience with them, so i cant say.
my problem seemed to be unique... when i played mp3's there was a horrid, random banging sound that accompanied the music. it made me very very angry. all fixed now though and im much less angry.
I'm using platinum Live! 5.1 with DTT2200 for DVD. Sound is very good for Deaktop theater. they are good enough for about $200 ( look around on net you will get some good price). Maybe you can check out Audigy too.
Trust me, I've heard plenty of different stuff out there.
Those DTT2200's are nice, friend of mine has them. Creative's speakers are actually pretty good for the price.
As for their cards...different story. Two of my friends have Audigys (had Lives before), and love them. Of course, they loved their Lives when they first got them, too.
The quality of the Dolby surround when watching DVD's is good - for a desktop PC system. As far as cheap 5.1 systems go, Yamaha do this TSS-1 speaker system which could be OK. I don't know how they measure up against the DTT2200's in price in America, but in Australia they're pretty cheap.
Edited by Novakain on 12/14/01 08:34 PM.
