So i have a prebuilt pc from 2008 and i plan on upgrading it in two big chunks. First the psu and video card. Then when i have more money ill be upgrading the motherboard and cpu.
Im planning on buying a gtx 660 which has is pcie 3.0 compatible. Will i be able to use this card on my old motherboard untill i upgrade?
The upgrade is so i can do some quality gaming

Solution
PCIe 3.0 is backwards compatible with the older PCIe slots. You'll be just fine.

All PCIe 3.0 on a GPU means is that it can make use of the full 3.0 bandwidth (if the card is fast enough, which the 660 isn't).
