I have an opportunity to buy a Japanese 1991 issue box set called the GAMERA
PERMANENT PRESERVATION BOX SET. Basically it's all the 60s Gamera movies in
one big box.

I can find out almost nothing about this set despite numerous searches.
Anybody out there got it? What are the transfers like? Are they
letterboxed? Subject to rot?

Cheers

Mark

About the only thing I can tell you for certain is that they are highly
unlikely to have any English subtitles.

Indeed, not much info in LDDb:
http://japanld.free.fr/laserdisc.php?id=31289

8 movies (1965 to 1980) all letterboxed in AOR, mono sound, CLV. Very
little risk of rot, it is a 1991 release. All these have been reissued
individually in 1995, but no other boxset collection exists than the
one you found.

Unless you're getting a really good deal with this, or particularly want
these films on LD for some reason, I'd pass. The LD transfers are
letterboxed (2.35:1) and should look fine, though I seem to recall some were
a little overmatted, but the enhanced DVD presentations should better them
(esp. on larger 16:9 monitors) plus the DVD Box set offers English
subtitles.

Thanks for the info folks. The seller is asking $150. Unless my sums are
way out that's about a third of the price it would be for me to get the
import DVD sets. I reckon that's a good deal. Feel free to disagree though
and convince me otherwise.

And thanks for pointing out the Laserdisc DataBase to me. A useful site
indeed.

Cheers

Mark

Hello NIcolas,

I cannot see your update for this title in my "update to process list", did
you forget to push "submit"? :-)

You are correct, the two Gamera DVD boxsets necessary to cover all 8
films cost new a total of about $420 tax included, but for this price
you also get a small Gamera replica and English subtitles. They might
be available used at a substantial lower price, though probably still
about twice the cost of the LD.
