I currently own an XPS 8500, which i bought recently. It came with a GeForce GT640, but I would really like to upgrade that card. The AMD HD7870 popped in my mind when I thought about upgrading, but I'm not sure if my PSU can handle it. The XPS 8500 comes with a 460W supply. Can that PSU handle the 7870? Any ideas in upgrading the stock PSU?

If it helps, the PC has an i7-3770, GeForce GT640, 8GB RAM, and a 1TB HDD.

Not sure if this helps, but i'm running a Sapphire HD 7870 on a 550 W PSU without any problems, BTW it's a GPU that you'll be getting 80+ FPS on ultra games.

the BIG question is how many amps are on the 12 volt rail?
you would most likely need to take the side of the case off to see the sticker on the PSU.
