Haven't built a computer since 2000

Been gaming on my laptop for quite a while and its time to build a desktop that can handle newer games. My main game right now is Arma II and as some may already know it is very CPU intensive and I'm looking to increase my fps past 20. Main usage for the computer will be games.

I use head phones when gaming. I plan on buying a decent sound card at a later date for my 5.1 surround speakers for music and movies.
I use a 50" Plasma TV via HDMI which is 1920 X 1080.
Already have a keyboard and mouse (USB).

I would like to get a Radeon graphics card. At this resolution would I need 2 graphics cards or will one suffice? And if 2 I would like to only buy one now and buy one at a later date.
The case doesn't need to be anything special. I just want to make sure everything will fit in nice and snug and allow room for upgrades.

Budget is around 1200 bucks.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
