All things being equal, does a CAV laser disc produce a better image than
a DVD?

Thanks...Curtin/Dobbs

Its a tough question especially since all things can never be equal when
comparing CAV LDs(analog) to DVD(digital). 1st of all, DVDs have up to
720x480/720x576 resolution, which was not possible with LDs. Personally, I
have never seen a well done DVD that did not outperform a well done LD...

No.

There is very little difference between a CLV and a CAV disc in terms of
perceptible picture quality. Laserdisc is still laserdisc.

No, because DVD has superior resolution and color fidelity.

Only if you consider NTSC the final goal of video playback.

All things being equal...how do we approach that? The Denon DVD-1600 is one of
the best players ever produced in terms of video quality. It'll easily trump
many machines costing more than twice as much, but it retailed for $329. How do
we choose which LD player to compare it to? Is it fair to force a $329 DVD
player to compete aganist machines that cost over $1,000 at new? In any case,
this is debateable. LDs never suffered with the artifacting problems that DVDs
can have, and AFAIK never had to deal with the Chroma Upsampling Error that the
vast majority of DVD players exhibit. But some LD players did a much better job
of elminating noise than others, and crosstalk, etc...Assuming that the display
device, viewing conditions, cable quality, etc... remain static, which two
players are used makes a difference. A DVD-1600 and HLD-X9 would make a great
comparison, theoretically. But wether you're running the Denon in Progressive
mode or not will affect the performance. And if the movie you are using
happened to be very well mastered on LD and very poorly so on DVD, it will make
a difference. You could have 10 people conduct this test and get 10 varied
results.

Your answer is a non-sequitor. DVD and laserdisc are both NTSC, and of
the two DVD has superior resolution and color fidelity.

I like people who can use "non-sequitur" correctly in a sentence. And
who can write a succinct and correct answer. Nicely done!

Are you comparing the best LD has to offer against an average dvd? That
certainly seems a bit unfair. And, remember, we're comparing players that
were built in the 90's against brand new DVD players. 5 years can be an
eternity in technology. If LD players were in still production, pioneer
might have a better player by now.

And you certainly can't compare any films that have been "remastered" for
DVD, use source material of different quality, or have different people
doing the "mastering". On a side note, I have no idea what mastering
involves...

My laserdiscs STILL look much better than my direct TV though.

Yes! Just pick a movie that isn't available on DVD.

Agree, except to note that non sequitur shouldn't be hyphenated.

Uh, someone asked about Laserdisc and DVD so NTSC is the only consideration here.

Stillframe is irrelevant because CAV only holds 30 minutes a side,
meaning side breaks and disc breaks.

I have both and I haven't turned on my LD player in YEARS. The last
time was to watch the Star Wars set...

Ah, you're right. No hyphen in ad-hoc or anno-domini, either...

It doesn't really matter. Such conditions do not exist, and being tottally
hypothetcial, any answer is correct.

LDs also had PAL releases, so why is NTSC the only consideration?

In the US, DVD and LD are NTSC. Check out the OP's ISP.
