This is the first computer I've built from scratch, I only had between 900-1k usd to put into it altogether.

Motherboard - ASRock 970 EXTREME4 AM3+

Processor - AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz Plus it comes with a liquid cooling kit.

Ram - G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB DDR3 1866

HDD - Mushkin Enhanced Chronos MKNSSDCR120GB 2.5" 120GB SATA III SSD

GPU - GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 1100 MHz instead of normal 1000

PSU - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80

Finally the case I picked was a Rosewill Thor V2 ATX tower with 4 built in fans.

It's a good build. I am an AMD fan myself just because of the budget and the OC capabilities. Personally, here though, I would have went with the FX-8350 Vishera for another $20. AMD reverted back to their Piledriver architecture which is more power efficient than their Bulldozer architecture. This means that they can drive their frequencies a bit higher. I know the liquid cooling kit sounded inviting especially if you plan to OC. But I would have waited on it.

Here are some benches that would support my reasoning.

I know intel has the upper hand (and probably always will) but you can't beat AMD for the price if budget is a concern.
