HD 7950 running hot after 12.11?

Hi all,

Quick question here:

I recently upgraded from a MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II to an XFX HD 7950. I have seen some increases in temps that I am having a hard time finding info on.

The 560Ti ran at 30-35 cel at idle and 50-55 cel at load. This has me all out of whack on GPU temps. My 7950 with 12.8 drivers was running 40 cel idle and 62-67 cel at load, which I believe is fairly normal. However when I jumped to 12.11 my idle temp now sits at 50-54 cel but still only pushes 62-67 cel at load.

I use Afterburner to OC the 7950, which is sitting at 925/1375 right now. I am curious if anyone else has seen such crazy idle temp increases since moving to 12.11? I am not sure what to do. But it is making me crazy.

I have uninstalled and rolled back to 12.8 and it seems to be back to 40 cel idle. Uninstalled>Safe Mode> Driver Sweeper and back to 12.11 but still running really hot. Cooling is not an issue that I had prior to 12.11, with any card for that matter.

I have seen info on issues with clock speed on 2D stuff after 12.11 but cannot find anywhere official that AMD states its impacting the 7950.

Rest of the setup is:

I5-2500K @ 4.0
Gigabyte Z68 1155 Board
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws
Samsung 830 256GB SSD
XFX HD7950 3GB DDR5

Or maybe I am crazy and 50-54 cel at idle is normal for the 7950. Thanks for any info.

You have nothing to worry about the card has max op temp close to 100°C and it is quite normal to have load temps in the upper 70's.

That's about how my sons 7950 runs it's a great card just not as good as people try to claim on this forum imo allot of it is hype. But you should be able to play most games on ultra. Anyway congrats on the new card.

12.11 drivers are pretty good! I'm able to play BF3 @1080P with high details on my 7850M.

so the idle temps are increasing with the new driver? i don't know how radeons handle clocks but it could be the card did not enter proper idle mode which resulting in higher idle temp than it should be.

this is off topic but OP what is your 560Ti exact model? 55c on load is quite impressive in my book :D . is it running games that heavily using gpu (90%+ gpu utilization) or furmark max temp?

Yeah I imagine it is not settling into proper 2D/idle mode. Its driving me bananas. Anyways my 560 was a:

MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

I rolled back to 12.8 and idle is right at 40c again after hovering at 52-54c idle with 12.11. At load I see no change still sits at 60-65c.

Guess I will wait for AMD to work it out. 50c+ at idle makes my fans to loud. Bugging me to no end.
