Case Fan Help

Hi I'm having trouble with one of my case fans. The case is NZXT source 210 elite. The case fan cable is too short to reach one of the headers on my motherboard (ASRock H77M). I have a molex cable but I'm not sure how it works. The case fan cable has a 3pin power, a male and female molex connector. The molex has a male connector and 2 4pin power connector. I tried plugging the male molex into the female and plugging the 4pin into my motherboard but that isn't working. Can someone help explain how molex works? Also could it be that the fan is broken? Thanks.

You just plug in the Molex. With it hooked to a molex it doesn't need to be hooked to the motherboard.

Is your fan PWM? If so, you might look into cable extenders. I honestly don't know if they make them, but I don't believe you can power a PWM fan from molex and still run it off the MOBO.

I think I was using a wrong cable. So I just connect the molex and connect it to the psu?

Yep. Just plug in the fan to the molex and you should be good to go.

Can/should I cut off the unused molex connectors?

No, definitely not. I assume you're referring to the ones on the PSU molex cable? No, just leave them, you don't want to damage the cables in any way. Same thing with any unused cables coming off of your fan.
