(As an aside to this, Nokia have announced that in Australia, they intend
to release 40 new handsets this year).

Nokia plans to sack 350 in US
Helsinki
January 28, 2005 - 1:18PM

Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, said on Thursday it would cut
350 jobs in the United States and would revamp its range of handsets for the
North American market in light of disappointing results there last year.

The company earlier reported net profit of ¤1.02 billion ($US1.33 billion)
in the fourth quarter and of ¤3.20 billion for all of 2004, beating
forecasts, but profit showed a decline of 13 and 11 percent respectively
from the previous year.

The company posted fourth-quarter sales of ¤9.1 billion, up three percent
from the ¤8.8 billion it reported for the same quarter a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by AFP's financial news service AFX had expected
fourth-quarter sales of ¤8.4 billion.

The mobile phone giant said it had sold a record 66.1 million handsets in
the fourth quarter, giving it 34 percent of the world market, down from 37
percent in the same period a year earlier but up from 32 percent in the
third quarter.

While Nokia remained unscathed as the rest of the telecom sector slogged
through post high-tech bubble problems a few years ago, the company saw its
market share taper off at the beginning of 2004, largely due to its slow
pick-up on the popularity of fold-out clamshell phones.

"For Nokia, device volumes also reached new highs for the fourth quarter and
full year largely backed by the ongoing boom in growth markets such as Latin
America, Russia, India and China, and brisk sales of color screen and camera
phones," Nokia chief executive Jorma Ollila said in a statement.

He added however that "our North American phone volumes were... disappointing."

Exactly the same chain of phone I've had over the years.
Always excellent quality and performance, however I
do worry about the newer ones as they do feel particularly
flimsy in the hand.

Rv!

More people must have displeasure with the Nokia firm, because of the
sales slump. But I am sure there are many other factors that could be
contributing to the decline in sales.

Unless you have it setup with a USB connection, you don't need the software.
