How much damage can a LD take?

I just received an item from an Ebay auction: "The Piano" on laserdisc,
spanning 3 sides on a 2 disc set. The playing side #3 has a deep radial
cut - almost perfectly from center point to edge as if it defines the
laserdisc's radius - all the way across.
It plays fine!!! That just amazes me. I was prepared to leave negative
feedback, but, for $1, everthing's OK by me.

A cracked disc usually will not play. You may be unaware that laserdiscs play
the bottom side of the disc, so when you are looking at the label that says
side 3, you are actually looking at side 4. Since the laserdosc is two discs
glued together, it is possiblt to only have one side cracked. This can happen
in shipping if it is not packaged properly (and sometimes even when package
properly).

Yeah - I just learned about that. The guy who sold me the laserdisc
explained it to me. Doh!!!

expressed a little disastisfaction because I thought he had described it
incorrectly.
I don't think it's a crack. It looks like someone swiped it with a box
cutter.

defective player who's pickup fell on the disc and scratched it
linearly when the tray was opened, i think.
