The wonders of Wireless

So I finally get my PC setup in my new apt. Bam, my wireless card picks up a signal and I'm getting free internet. Signal is weak, only about 2-11Mbps, but that's still about 1Mbps internet.

I love my neighbors. I get free internet from them and when I stumbled over to them needing a bottle opener for my beers the one neighbor let me use theirs, and the other let me borrow theirs for the night.

I changed the password on their router. When they figure me out I'll get my own ISP.

I can understand your reaction. And people should be more carefull with the technology they use. In this case one might also expect some better protection support from the product by default (as many people may lack the knowledge to look into wireless security issues).

However if I would find out my neighbor was doing this, I think I would consider it stealing (assume that they have a fair use policy, you are stealing some of their quota). Changing a password could be considered tresspassing.

It looks like you are breaking the law but I am sure you are more aware of what applicable law says about this than I am (as I am living in Europe). If you plan on living in your current place for awhile it might be more profitable for you to get along well with your neighbors. In the netherlands we have the following saying: "Beter een goede buur dan een verre vriend", or "Better to have a friendly neighbor than a far away friend", you might need them one day (for something more significant than a bottle opener).

I've been using it for a few hours now. Not using much bandwidth at all. I'm getting a weak signal.

So far no one has logged on to this network besides me. If I'm seriously interfering with someone's bandwidth I'll get my own ISP, but for now this is just too funny.

Why change the password? Somebody has to. I'm doing the guy a damn favor. A jerk would go in there, block his MAC address and he wouldn't be able to do anything since odds are that he wouldn't know how to reset his router. Besides, I don't feel like having him get in there and read the logs.

The problem is that the connection isn't that fast. At one point I was around 200kbps.

I can't hog the damn bandwidth. It's great for surfing the net, but for bittorrent I'm getting a yellow dot, ie firewalled. It's driving me crazy. I port fowarded everything right but I'm getting no good speeds. What's the difference between port fowarding and port triggering?

To tell you the truth, I have no idea. I'm gonna have to bone up on it when I eventually get a firewall/router etc, but at the moment, I'm a complete no nothing dumbass. Sorry man.

What's the storage on DVD's 3.2GB? Something like that anyway. Imagine how long it'd take with CDRW. When you come to reload it all, it'll be like a trip down memory lane, when you used to build Win3.1 PC's with a shitload of floppy disks and several hours to kill.

I saw a LiteOn DVD burner in the paper last week for $89. Can't remember which store though. If I had the money, I'd of got one.

WHy don't you pay your neighbours a visit, and propose to share costs ? its what I do with my neighbours; I've got an AP here, granted them access, and they pay roughly half the cost of the connection. Makes them happy, and me too.

Like BigMac said, I don't know about where you live, but here you would be commiting a crime. Just doesnt seem worth it for those few dollars per month, not too mention good relationships with your neighbours.

I have hundreds of neighbors. I think it's safe to say that there are potentially a couple dozen apt's within wireless range. I'm actually picking up 2 connections but one has a key.

Daniel, This is funny and fun now, but sooner or later its going to bite you right in the A$$, you are definitely breaking the law and you know it, you changed his password so he can't access his own router, what kind of crap is that, Do the right thing man, what you're doing is wrong, and its the biggest arguement I know of, for clueless people to stay away from a Wireless Connection.

If his neighbors are not the sueing kind of people, then that might be some good advice, but if he runs up on some people I've known in the past, that sue people at the drop of a hat, then offering to share costs with them and letting them know what he's been doing, is the worst thing he could do for himself, because out of his own mouth he'd lay the foundation for a lawsuit against himself.

The best thing for him to do is to undo what he's done, keep his mouth shut about it and use the knowledge he's gained to keep his own connection secure and pay for his own service, not steal someone elses.

Well really Grubby, I just don't want to see him get in any trouble, not that he would post it here if he did, its just not worth it. This issue is turning out to be a growing problem that sooner or later is going to turn into a major issue, thats agressively going to be handled with prosecutions. But we're just seeing the tip of the iceburg on the subject now, but I guarantee you its going to get worse.

I'm not going to offer anybody anything. I don't want to share costs for a measly 100kpbs. I'll spend the $35 and get my own. Right now I've just moved in though and it's just too funny that some noob left his entire connection open with all the settings at their default.

I'm not an idiot and I'm not going to go door to door to hundreds of people trying to figure out who it is. He's a noob and he's lucky that nobody blacklists his own MAC address.

That's what happens when you just broadcast your signal for everyone to see. It's really the equivalent of having a 62" TV in your window for others to see and use a universal remote to change the channel.

Yeah, changing the password on someone's router is a crappy thing to do considering that he doesn't even know it exists.

I don't want him reading the logs. That's just what I need, some guy seeing THGC in the logs and coming here wreaking havoc. I used common sense.

I can get into just about as much trouble doing this as I can opening someone's garage with my remote.

Don't blow this out of proportion. I haven't set up my phone, cable, or internet in my apt and this little experience really was a pleasant surprise that brought a lot of laughs from me and my friends who helped me move in.

You can claim innocence, and it probably was a lot of fun in the beginning, LOL for you and your friends, but when you did the password thingy, you broke the law. if the guy is stupid enought not the config a WEP password. There is no way you'll get caught. Funny how i have like 6 network shared printer on my wireless computer downstairs and i live in a house too! good thing i got WEP on
