500$ for an upgrade

Okay, so I bought a pre-built IBUYPOWER pc last year and it's been a real champ. Bought it for $800 last year and it's been incredible for gaming. I am getting roughly 500$ that I want to put into the PC to upgrade it. I am not a big hardware guy, so I could use some help. I know for a fact that I NEED a new psu because everyone said theres broke right away since it's cheap, I guess I have been really lucky that it still works. Other then that, idk what. I know I probably need a new mobo because I dont think I can insert another GPU onto it, but like I said, I'm not THAT great with this stuff. Also I read that SDD might be good but I'm don't really know what those are for gaming. Here are my specs, any input would mean A TON!

More about : 500 upgrade

December 23, 2012 3:21:48 AM

That is a whole block full of needless information. This is what we need out of that block:

Quote:

Processor: AMD FX6100
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Graphics: NVidia GTX 560

Budget: $500
Graphics: GTX 560
CPU: FX6100
Mobo: GA-M68mt-S2
RAM: 8gb

What we're missing:
-Power Supply
-RAM Speed

-Without the PSU, we don't know how much power your rig gives out, and we cannot recommend a better Graphics card.
-Without the RAM Speed we do not know what motherboards it will fit into, and we cannot recommend a CPU/Motherboard

Shipping on orders of 50 dollars or more is free(automatic with the gpu, psu is free shipping too when shipped with gpu).

Your mobo supports overclocking and your FX cpu is unlocked. Overclock that sucker. I only wonder how well your cpu is cooled.

Many cyberpower and ibuypower rigs are liquid cooled, which should allow for a decent overclock(over 4ghz). That should help eliminate any bottlenecks to the gpu. an ssd doesn't do a whole lot for gaming(faster game loads and level loads). It's more to improve general system response(the high iops are great for launching apps) and faster boot times(same).

Sorry, the reason I posted all of that bs was incase PSU info was in there or not. My ram speed...hmmm...it's 8 gigs I know that. I think it is 1333 or whatever. PSU is 750 watt, but very cheap.

here's my suggestio:

swap out the 6100 for a 8320 ($160), add a 128 GB SSD ($90). then a GTX 660 ($230)

What exactly is the psu brand? i would highly recommend a corsair 650w just because they are extremely reliable and have something like a 5 year warranty. Also get either a samsung 128gb or OCZ 128gb ssd as both of these are very reliable and very fast. depending on how much this leaves you a 7950 is a great choice of graphics card as it is highly overclockable and a great card for the price. i would recommend either a vapor-X or msi twin frozr version of the card.
here are some suggestions.

I feel I need to explain my suggestions to you. The xfx 550 watt power supply is a high quality unit built by seasonic with a 5 year warranty. It has 44 amps on its single +12 volt rail (ie 528 watts) which is more than enough to power an overclocked fx6100 and an overclocked hd7970(along with the rest of the system). It sounds like that cheapo 750 watt psu cyber power put in you system has failed for a lot of folks just with a stock fx6100 and a stock gtx560. Granted the gtx560 is like a 160w graphics card and an fx6100 is like a 95w cpu, but an fx8320 is 125w stock(more if you overclock, which you should to eliminate any bottleneck to the graphics card) and the gtx660 is right at the limits of its power connectors(140w card on the mobo's pcie graphics slot and 1 6pin connector totaling 150w) allowing next to no overclocking headroom(see hardocp's overclocking tests on the asus dc2 gtx660 for more details). You can get an xfx hd7970 for even cheaper right now at ncix than before(when you buy 50 or more from them in one go, shipping on your order is free. That means you can get that power supply for 40 bucks after rebate and the graphics card for 340 bucks after rebate shipped free).

xfx 550w 39.99 after $10 MIR at ncix: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59615&vpn=P1550SXXB9&m...

xfx hd7970 339.99 after $30 MIR at ncix: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=67172&vpn=FX797ATDFC&m...

Forgot to mention the cooler on this particular hd7970. It's a xfx double dissipation cooler with 2 fans and copper heat pipes. It should allow for a great overclock while keeping the card cool and your system quiet. I have read many cyberpower and ibuypower magazine adds and know that for a more enthusiast system like yours(fx6100, gtx560) versus a weak system(slow dual core and integrated graphics or a bottom of the barrel card) they use what I believe may be a custom liquid cooling loop(better than a closed loop or high quality heat sink fan). Maybe they use that type of cooling on all systems. Anyway, one newegg user review for your mobo mentions an fx6100 overclocked to 4.2ghz. That should eliminate any real bottleneck to a new gpu with settings cranked to 11(once you overclock the hd7970, it should be faster than a ghz ed. card and gtx680 making it pretty much the fastest single gpu card you can get). The card is kind of long and will block the top 2 of 4 sata ports on your mobo, but if you are using one hard drive and one optical drive, you could simply use the bottom 2 sata ports. This wouldn't allow for an ssd, but that really won't do a whole lot for you in games anyway. Hopefully your case has clearance for the card from the back to the hard drive cage(274mm ie 10.8 inches long). Hope this helps. Oh, yeah. if you buy a new mobo, you'll need a new copy of windows as well( the oem copy that came preinstalled on you pc is tied to the first mobo it was installed on). Just overclock your current cpu on that mobo with what I believe is the good liquid cooling provided. If you have an amd stock cooler, you can pick up a decent air cooler for cheap. Examples include:

Cooler master hyper tx3(enough to overclock a 125w phenom II x4 965BE to 4ghz with decent temps for 17.99 and free shipping at amazon.com : http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0028Y4S9K/?tag=pcpapi-20

Cooler master hyper 212 plus (performs similar to the 212 evo ie within 1c while improving on the tx3 with a larger fan, another heat pipe and a heatsink with more surface area) for 19.99 at ncix: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=41337&vpn=RR-B10-212P-...

Cooler master hyper 612( up to 6c-7c cooler than a hyper 212 with similar acoustics) for 24.99 after a $15 MIR and free shipping at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The tx3 should be easiest to mount(unlike the other two which require you to install a plate behind the cpu socket on the mobo to secure the cooler). If you did get the xfx 550w, the xfx hd7970 and a hyper tx3, that would be about $395 after $40 in MIRs or well under your budget of $500. On that xfx 550w, it has all the connectors you'll need(4+4pin/8pin cpu power connector that splits apart so you can use just one 4pin on that mobo, 1pcie 8pin/6+2pin and 1 6pin for the hd7970, 24pin mobo connector and lots of sata and peripheral connectors). not modular, but you can keep the extra cable either in a free optical bay(if psu top mounts in your case) or at the bottom(if psu bottom mounts in your case). Depending on your model of case, you may be able to easily remove some of the hard drive cage if need be to fit a longer graphics card and still have a spot for your hard drive. This hd7970 comes with 3 free games(Far Cry 3, Hit Man Absolution and Sleeping Dogs). I'd be interested to know about you current case and cpu cooler. You could spend some of your upgrade money on a good case like a cooler master haf 912: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55583&vpn=RC-912-KKN1&...

I suppose I would be remiss if I didn't mention this pny gtx670 for 279.99 after a $40 MIR and free shipping at amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0080JPHGU/?tag=pcpapi-20

Or a galaxy gtx670 with 2 free games(Assassin's Creed 3 and Borderlands 2) for 299.99 after a $20 MIR and free shipping at newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The gtx670 can be overclocked to run faster than a gtx680 and roughly on par with a hd7970 ghz ed. card. Tremendous bang for buck.

Finally, I'm wondering about your ram. If you want to install a tower style cooler but have ram with tall heat spreaders, the two items might bump heads. Your mobo supports DDR3 1600 ram. You could get some good ram with low profile heatspreaders like this kit:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

That's only if you find yourself needing shorter ram. Otherwise, what you have is perfectly fine for gaming with a discrete video card.
