Hello,

I'm trying to revitalize an old computer (Dell Dimension E521) by adding extra RAM and a new graphics card.

With regard to the graphics card, my system currently has a 128 Mb Geforce 7300 LE, which, I understand, is pretty poor.

I found a Sapphire Radeon HD6450 SILENT, 2GB, but I’m not sure whether this will work on my system for two reasons. First, my system has 305w power supply and according to the official specifications the replacement card requires 400w. Second, I have a PCI Express 1.x expansion bus rather than the required 2.x.

Will this card run on my system? And, if not, what would be a good alternative to replace my outdated Geforce 7300 LE?

Some details on my Dell E521:

Operating System
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3
CPU
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Windsor 90nm Technology
Power
DC power supply: Wattage 305 W
Maximum heat dissipation 1041 BTU/hr
Voltage 90 to 135 V and 180 to 265 V at 50/60 Hz
RAM
1,00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 245MHz (4-4-4-12)
Motherboard
Dell Inc 0CT103 (Socket M2 )
Graphics
SyncMaster (1440x900@60Hz)
128MB GeForce 7300 LE (Dell)

Thanks.

There is no "requirement" for PCIE video cards. They are all compatible from 1.x to 3.x. Secondly, take a look at the Radeon 7750. It uses no external power, draws all the power it needs from the PCIE slot and can be found for under $100 (after rebates). No need to upgrade your PSU.

Such as the Sapphire Radeon 7750 1gb $95 shipped $85 after MIR

Thank you for your quick answer. I found a Radeon 7750 for around 90 Euros, but I'm looking more for something in the 50 Euros range. Is there anything available in that range that doens't cause any power problems? I can get the Sapphire Radeon HD6450 SILENT, 2GB for 51. Will it work?
