An idiot proof explanation of cuda cores.

What is a cuda core, is it like a core on a cpu? Do ati and intel gpus have multiple cores like nvidia's cuda cores. Im confused because i cant comprehend how a gpu can have 4096 cores....

    That's exactly what it is. GPU cores are smaller than CPU cores though. Taken from official Nvidia website:

  2. Sounds like this is being done for a school project and might need you to go to www.goggle.com or maybe www.nvidia.com and look this stuff up.
  3. I dont normally link to wikipedia, but it has all the information you'll probably need about it, basically they are programmable cores which is useful to programs that have complex compute calculations that a CPU couldnt handle...

    CUDA cores are new names created by nvidia previously it is known as stream processors. (amd still calls theirs as stream processors or in short SP). there are many cores in gpu but it cannot be compared directly to cores in cpu because they behave differently.

    also you can't compare nvidia and ati (amd) core directly as well to compare the performance between the two because they were build based on different architecture. for example amd 7970 have 2k SP in it but it perform around the same as 680 in games which only have 1.5k SP.
