I'm just about to order my pc parts to build my first gaming rig of a budget variation, then further on upgrading it. The thing is i'm not quite sure about how many watts i need for my system. About the graphics card it says it's recommended to have 400W minimum. The CPU TDP is 125W and there's also other components that needs power if you need to count those in as well. I thought a 500W Fractal Design PSU would do fine but now i'm getting a little skeptical.

The parts i'm going with is:

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 650 1024MB OC V1

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 3,4GHz Black Edition

Motherboard: Asrock 960GM-GS3 FX

RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE LP

HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm SATA

More about : watts needed

The 650 doesn't use that much power but it's not the best choice for gaming (if that's the priority). If you post your budget I can suggest parts. If gaming isn't the priority you could get something like the Seasonic 430W - it's much better than the Corsair CX430.

If you already have the Fractal power supply, You should be ok. The GTX 650 is not that power hungry.

Definitely be fine. One of the Corsair 430Watts or Antec 380 watt basic supplies would be enough for that system (from experience- I have one of the Antec 380s powering that same CPU + a more power hungry graphics card than the 650 no problem)

Edit to add, it's as much about quality as wattage. Some of the $15 "400" or "500" watt non-80 plus power supplies you could buy are way overrated, (as are the power supplies in many dell, gateway, etc) which is why people have trouble.

as nukemaster said, if you already have a psu, it should be good. fractal gets it from ok suppliers. not seasonic level but pretty good

After two failed attempts on two different builds I discovered that the Corsair CX430 is a piece of crap compared to say the Seasonic 430W - that's a far better supply than anything else you can get.
