Monitor no signal when gpu is plugged in

just built my first pc and i got the post beep and everything but when i have my gpu plugged in to my motherboard my monitor gets no signal using the vga cable. i can not plug my monitor into my gpu because i don't have an hdmi to vga adapter how do i change it so i get video from my gpu and my mobo? please help specs are : sapphire 7950 3gb, i5 3570k, asrock z77 pro4 ,8gb crucial ram,630w psu,

I also just got a bsod when i booted it up without a gpu to try and install windows. is that because i dont have a gpu? or something else? edit:just tried installing windows xp with gpu installed and still got bluescreen
