How do you lose 10c without adding a water cooler? Blow the friggen dust out of the HS & HSF!
I don't know how the temps got that high. Checked them yesterday, 49c idle. This 2500 is a lot cooler than that. Took it out in the garage & took the air compressor to it. Dust everywhere. Plugged it back in, 39c. Imagine that! In my armoire this thing just loads up with dust. I love this desk, but dust is a killer.
So, I took my fans off of the Smart Fan connectors on my Antec True Power to let them turn faster. That dropped me down to 35c. I'm wondering if that will make it load up with dust that much faster? I may throw in one more fan in the case. I'm OCed to 2800 speeds.
Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!
Dust is an excellent insulator RC, unless it gets wet, I took my fans off that smart fan connector from the very beginning, you're lucky you didn't damage something with using an air compressor to blow the thing out with, because of the static electricity it can build up, its always a good idea to keep one hand on the metal case and the other on the blow off nozzle, to be on the safe side. Static electricity can kill a computer dead as a doornail, our local computer store found that out the hard way, they weren't taking any static electricity precautions at all and after loosing 5 computers in a row, invested in grounding mats and straps. Its safer to use the compressed air in the cans for cleaning the dust out as far as static electricity goes, they do an amazingly great job. Just a friendly little warning here, not trying to be a computer cleaning instructor.
Man THGF was slow as molasses in wintertime last night, I fell asleep waiting for the threads to load, seems pretty quick this morning though.

I agree with you on the compressor for sure. Trouble is, when I use a can of air, I run out of it before the CPU is cleaned out. Stuff isn't cheap either. I'll see how running the fans quicker does. I think I'll add another fan on the front of the case also.
Main problem is my armoire. Wife made me get it (& I do really like it), because my computer is in the great room. She wanted to be able to close it up when people come over. My son has the same rig at his house we built & he doesn't have a dust problem like I have. Trouble is where the CPU sits it's like a wind tunnel pulling in the dust like a magnet from the room. She doesn't want it sitting beside of it either. $1000 head ache I'm stuck with.
I've thought about getting creative. My Grandfather Clock I built, recommends that you put a lightly coated rag with oil on it in the head of the clock. It picks up the dust that comes in the clock. I change it a couple of times a year. Keeps the clock real clean. You ought to see the rag after 6 months! Haven't worked up the balls to try in in the CPU!
It was slow last night. I got on before I went to bed & found the same thing.
Did you get Far Cry going?

Speaking about getting creative!
I could make a screen door, like your screen door on a house, with small mesh that would cover the CPU hole. Hinge the thing up, there you go! Wonder what she'd think of that one?

I don't think I'd put an oily rag inside of a computer RC! LOL
///Did you get Far Cry going?
Yes I did, but already removed it from the machine, because I've gotten into Tron2 and its a little time consuming, and I'm online gaming with Will Rock (A Serious Sam type of game Clone), with a friend of mine, so I really don't have the time to get into FarCry, but it looked interesting, and will probably jusy buy the game later.

Panty Hose type material is the best dust trapper, you can superglue some inside the intake ports of the case and capture 90% of the dust, but you'll need to clean it regularly, or it will suffocate the machines air flow. The best thing is to clean it on a regular basis, and not allow a severe dust buildup.

LOL I thought about putting panty hose over the whole case. Couldn't figure out how to turn the dam thing on then.
My 1080 AMG case already has a filter built in like a dryer filter on the front of the case. The side door where the vid card fan is, has nothing to filter it!
Back to the drawing board, I guess.
Got to run Man. Going to have some fun with my cousin today!

static electricity is just a boogy man story. you have to try pretty damned hard to fry anything with static. i have purposely tried, i shocked myself on an old mobo several times and theres nothing wrong with the damn thing. its just another myth to scare people into being afraid of pcs. though im not saying its impossible, the more you try that on lots of systems, eventually your going to fry one, but its common sence man!

Well thanks for enlightening us on that, why don't you also enlighten the Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Graphic Card, Soundcard, Internal Modems, Lans, Hardrives, Etc. manufacturers that spend Millions of dollars combined, that they could actually save the money they're having to invest in, Static Warning labels on their products, Static precautions printed in their manuals, and all the Static precautions they take in manufacturing their products.
If you were right they could save quite a bit of money, and in this money hungry environment they would pocket that money if the warnings weren't necessary, but I don't think they see it the way you do, because the warnings are still on the products, aren't they!!!
What I posted happened and the local computer builders where I live now use static precautions, and they wouldn't have pulled out all the money to equip their workstations, to make them as static free as possible if it wasn't necessary, so it isn't a boogie man story, its the truth.

I dropped my temps a couple degrees as well. I had half a cat in there. The biggest difference was the reduction in noise though. With all the dust on the blades it was getting out of hand.
After that I just took all the fans out. It seems to be doing fine with no fans. My PSU is making all the noise now.

I assemble all my computers on the carpet. I usually put the cards on a box or something. I have never once had a problem with static electricity, or any "dead" part after assembling a system. I use an air compressor to clean off my computers, and have never had a problem.
I think the static electricity problem is real, but don't think it is very easy to kill a part because of it. I am pretty careless with it, but have never seen a problem...

"Trying is the first step towards failure."
yea really eh
ive put together a couple hundred systems... often in a rush, probably scuffling my feet across the rough carpet back in the shop area and i have never ever seen something die from static discharge..
take into account there was my 2 bosses and my co-worker also, thats alot of chances to fry something and yet nothing happened...

I've never managed to kill anything with static, and I never bother with much in the way of precautions either. All I usually do when building a comp is make sure the PSU is fitted first, and keep it plugged in all the time (but with the power off at the socket), so the whole case becomes grounded. That way you get rid of any little charge you build up just through routinely touching the case while assembling.
I just clean out the dust occasionally and it seems ok. I obviously open it up to fiddle with too often for the dust to be a problem
.

Those of you who think you know everything are annoying to those of us who do.
I have fried something. It was years ago though in an old Mac Plus. My Dad and I were both upgrading from 1MB of 120ns memory to 4MB. Killed the whole computer and cost thousands to replace.
Nowadays I've done a lot of the work on carpet and not had a problem, but I do try to take precautions. When I build a whole rig I'll get away from the carpet but if it's just a component or two I'll do it on carpet out of laziness.

Damn RC!!!, I didn't realize I was going to cause all this static electricity bitching, from a simple suggestion, I really don't give a sh!t one way or the other what these guys do or have done, with their computers, they can stick them up their a$$'$, and pull em back out, and plug them in, and if they work I still don't give a sh!t.

Better safe than sorry. People forget that static electricity doesn't necessarely have to kill your product outright. It might just damage it and lead to untold headaches down the road.

I agree. What the hey does a static strap cost? I've just always done it & don't really think much more than that about it. I haven't had a problem, so if it ain't broke....
Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!
I'm too lazy to use it everytime I swap out a component though. I used a strap when I built my PC, but as I've upgraded I haven't.
I actually stripped down into my underwear, did it on hardwood floors, used a static strap, and still tapped the PSU when I built my first PC since I'd had a previous computer go up in smoke. I sure am sexy when I built PC's.

The MOBO? What did you do, get the HSF seated better the second time around?

Dust is a pain for me too.
I made a filter for my Antec 600 Series Mini Tower using 1/4 inch thick polyester filter media and velcro tape.
I have three small velcro strips on the frame around my two intake fans to hold the polyester filter media in place. I change the filter every three months and use a can of compressed gas to blow out the fans and hardware.
It's still a pain but it keeps the motherboard and other components from getting excessively dusty. I still have to disconnect the computer, take the side and front panels off to get at the filter media.
In a few years when I build a completely new system I'm going to invest in a case that has an integrated externally accessable removable filter cartidge that can be washed. I'd like to see something similar to what is used in window air conditioner. Simple and convenient.
