I would say between those two the Nvidia card. Last Nvidia card I owned was the gtx 8800. After that 5850, 6860, and now 7870.

The one thing I want to point out is I would go MSI for the 7950 just because their cooling system is way better than ASUS; which, ASUS 7870 cooling sucks compared to the MSI 7870.

The 680 is faster but if you are using a single monitor at 1080p you wont notice a difference. The 680 is kinda overpriced. The 7970 Ghz edition is a bit cheaper and in the same performance range as the 680. If you want to stick with Nvidia you can get a factory oc'ed 670 that is about as fast as a stock 680.

Sapphire has dual x which is supposed to be the best cooling on the market

Splendid
those 2 cards arent usually compared to each other like that, 2 different leagues and all that...
usually ppl compare 7950 to 670 and 7970 to 680...

so if you have the money get the more expensive one and if you feel like saving some buy the cheaper one. :p

What about the 7970 vs 680

as far as pure performance goes they are pretty darn even with the latest drivers...
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/23.html
at higher resolutions amd cards tend to work better as they have more memory on board but that would mean like 30'' monitor at 2560*1600 or multi monitor setup...
at this point it comes down to finding good sales on some specific card or personal preference between the two brands. AIB partners tend to use similar cooling solution on both gpus if they offer both in their line up (some are 'brand loyal' thou)

I have the MSI 7870. It is OCed to 1250/1400 @ 1.299V and only hits 63c in 3d mark 11. Stock fan speed I might add. So the information i'm giving you is from exprience and not something I read off the internet. I had the ASUS 7870 and would hit 78C with same OC and score around 1000(p) less than the MSI in 3d mark 11.
