hi there,
im wondering if you could help me, im trying to run dual monitors from one pc

this is the graphics card i am using http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R6850-PMD1GD5.html#/?div=Overview

the main monitor i have connected a DVI-D (dual link) to DVI-D (dual link) (the output on the monitor is a DVI-D (dual link) the output on the graphics card is DVI-I (Dual link)

i bought a cable splitter DVI-I to DVI + VGA
plugged the splitter into dvi-i port of graphics card and i ran a VGA cable from the 2nd monitor and plugged that into the vga port and the first monitor into the DVI port of the adapter, but only one monitor works.

do you have any ideas which cables i may need to get both of these working ?

on an older graphics card it had a dvi-i dual link slot and a vga port next to it, so i just plugged everything in like i did with the adapter and everything worked fine, which is why i thought the adapter i purchased would work in the same sort of way.

monitor 1 has a dvi port & vga port & monitor 2 has vga

many thanks for your help :)

Splitters only work for cloning that output. To get dual monitors with what you have you'll need a hdmi to dvi cable for the monitor with the dvi port, for the VGA monitor use the dvi port with the dvi to VGA adapter that shipped with the card.

Monitor 1 will be hooked up into card's HDMI via a DVI -> HDMI cable such as this: http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352573853&sr=8-1&keywords=dvi+to+hdmi+cable

Monitor 2 will be hooked up to card's DVI-I port via a DVI-I -> VGA adapter - Your splitter should work fine or this: http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Connectland-CL-ADA31002-Female-Adapter/dp/B002R0DZXU/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352573923&sr=1-2&keywords=dvi+to+vga+adapter
