Why wouldn't you get a graphics card?

No, neither the motherboard nor the CPU have graphics capabilities - the easiest way to tell is to look at the I/O ports of the motherboard, in the case of the AsRock 970 Extreme3, you notice there are no DVI, HDMI or even VGA outputs... nowhere to connect a monitor, that should be your first indication that a dedicated graphics card will be needed.
Hope it helps

Yes, but the question is why would you? What is the purpose of this build?

What are you using this build for? If you are really against a graphics card, get a trinity APU.

cpu: amd fx 6300 - £108
case: Zalman Z11 - £52
ram: Corsair Vengeance 4GB - £18
psu: Novatech PowerStation Gaming 500W - £45
gpu:Novatech GeForce 210 1024MB GDDR3 - £23
motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme3 AMD 970 - £65
total: £310.93

but the cpu needs a 1.60 bios update i'm hoping the board will come on 1.60+

That will work, but again, I ask what the purpose of this build is.

Both of your latest builds would work. Personally, I'd go with the Intel build. When you've saved enough money, get a quality power supply and a discrete graphics card for gaming.
