Which operating system for a home server?

I have a spare PC that has the following components:

DG31PR mobo
DDR2-800 4GB(max)
core 2 duo 3.0 ghz
1 x 500GB HDD

The purpose of server would be to store videos files and backup mac OS and windows 7 PC's. I would be adding a couple of 2TB drives. What is preferred OS for a home server?

Windows 7 costs $100 to buy. I suggest Linux or Ubuntu as they are free.

You could also just buy external HDD's if you are just using the computer for data backup.. That would be a better idea instead of buying that 2TB internal, just get a 2TB external drive.
