Advice on selling old laptop / parts and shopping for a laptop...

December 28, 2012 6:03:38 PM

So I thought I had solved my new laptop issue, having found a decent HP with respectable power in the affordable range. Turns out I am back to the drawing board, as I am just about a $100 bucks short. The system I found was:

HP ENVY 15.6" LED display
Intel Core i7 3630QM @ 2.4GHz base to 3.1GHz (4 physical cores / 8 logical cores)
6GB DDR3 System Ram
750GB HDD Internal Storage
nVidia 630M Switchable Discrete Graphics with 2GB DDR3 dedicated GFx memory (not GDDR5 but far better than Intel 4000 graphics) + additional 1.6GB shared
SuperMulti DVD Writer
Plus other features summarized here: 4 USB ports (3X USB 3.0, 1X USB 2.0), VGA Out, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, WiFi BGN, HDMI out, HD WebCam and ANR Mics.
Cont: Audio in/out, NumPad side keypad, Fingerprint authentication, 4.1 on board quad speaker + subwoofer sound.
Windows 8 loaded.

Retail: $775 + tax.

This turns out to be just about $150 - $200 outside my range, so I either need to come down in my desired performance, or unload my current and previous systems to make up the difference.

I would prefer to take in enough from what I can sell to get this system as I have yet to find anything with performance even half this good for less than $600.

Here is what I have to sell (I just don't know the best way to get the most money for what I have).

Systep 1: Nonfunctional HP Pavilion DV7 1130US laptop:
AMD Turion x2 64
4 GB DDR2 System RAM (2GB DDR2 X2)
320GB HDD SATA @ 5400
ATI onboard Graphics (don't know if the main board is worth anything).
Nonfunctional optical drive, display inverter, battery.

System 2: Functional HP 2000 Laptop:
AMD E-350 Dual Core 1.6GHz CPU
3GB DDR3 System RAM (2GB 8500 + 1GB 8500)
240GB HDD SATA @ 5400
AMD Vision Discrete Class Integrated Graphics
3 USB 2.0, 10/100 RJ45 Ethernet, BGN WiFI, 15.6 LED Display, WebCam/Mic, Audio in/out, VGA out, Multi Card Reader, SuperMulti Drive.
AC/Power/Charging cord is damaged and taped in a few areas but fully functional.

Would it be best to part out from System 1 the 2X 2GB DDR2 sticks, Turion 64 X2 CPU (if not integrated), and HDD? How about the MoBo? Anything else? Or should I sell it all as a unit? I only know of eBay to do this on, so any better options to sell this system/parts?

I would think since System 2 is functional it would be best to sell it as a working system, and again know of only eBay to get this done. Suggestions on parting it, selling intact, or where to sell?

I should note I need to transfer the data from the aforementioned system drives somewhere so I can retain the files, or either keep the drives and put a replacement HDD in the working system if sold as a unit. I don't know which would be cheaper...

I would like to get $250 from all this at least, hopefully more...

If I can't raise enough more money for the Intel Core i7 system I am salivating over, here are my base requirements, followed by more preferred (the new ENVY I mentioned being ideal in the $800 < price range).

Base:
Minimum 4 logical cores (3rd gen Intel Core i5 or i7 with dual core or 4 core) with performance at least half that of the i7 3630QM (8 logical cores, 4 physical at 2.4- 3.1 GHz)
6GB DDR3 dedicated System Ram (or 8GB DDR3 shared system/graphics RAM)
Discrete graphics with 2GB GFx RAM (2GB dedicated discrete GFxRAM + 6GB system DDR3 -or- 2GB system shared GFxRAM with at least 6GB system DDR3 remaining)
500GB HDD SATA @ 5400
SuperMulti Drive
4X USB 2/3, HDMI out, 10/100 RJ45 Ethernet, BGN WiFI, VGA, Multi Card Reader, Windows 8 Loaded.

Preferred:
Minimum 4 logical cores (3rd gen Intel Core i5 or i7 with dual core or 4 core) with performance at least 75% that of the i7 3630QM (8 logical cores, 4 physical at 2.4- 3.1 GHz)
6GB - 8GB DDR3 dedicated System Ram
nVidia Switchable Discrete Graphics with 2GB GFx RAM
750GB HDD SATA @ 5400 or better
SuperMulti Drive or better
4 USB (3 or more USB 3.0), VGA Out, 10/100/1000 Ethernet (gigabit optional), WiFi BGN, HDMI out, HD WebCam and ANR Mics.
Audio in/out, NumPad side keypad, Fingerprint authentication, 4.1 on board dual/quad speaker + subwoofer, MultiCard Reader.

Windows 8 Loaded.

I know it is a complex question since there are interacting variables, but any help would be most appreciated...
