Have you tried using the hard drive installaltion utility disk that comes with a new Maxtor HD? If you don't have it, you can get it at the Maxtor web site.

You are going to have to go part way with us on this.
You can open up your case and write down what you see on the motherboard :make, model, any number and version.
Also you say your sys does`nt recognise your new DD, what happens exactly and how is your sys set up and of course what are the components of your sys. ?

Or identify your motherboard by the BIOS string that comes up on black screen left lower corner during start-up.
Press <Pause> to see it better. Or before power ON unplug the keyboard.
These are the sites:

<A HREF="http://195.60.1.155/sysserv/page194.html" target="_new">http://195.60.1.155/sysserv/page194.html</A>

<A HREF="http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html" target="_new">http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html</A>

Or try to find your motherboard through Google search by that number (cut last symbols after “-“ at the end and try again, if no luck).

Or use a program called SiSoft Sandra. It identifies the manufacturer of your mobo, it’s the best way:

<A HREF="http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10102-108-35399.html?tag=st.dl.10102.upd.10102-108-35399" target="_new">http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10102-108-35399.html?tag=st.dl.10102.upd.10102-108-35399</A>

Or, here's a site for finding out Manufacturers:
FCC.gov

Heres what happends:
When i have the HD in, when i boot up my comp and it gets to were it read the Primary, Secondary Master and Slave, it stops on that HD. It just stops there and does nothing, it says: press f4 to skip". when i go into my BIOS to detect new HD's it doesnt detect it. the comp freezes and there is nothing i can do but reboot. i know the HD works because i brought it back to were i bought it and they tried it out. i even saw it work there. all they said was to update my BIOS.

So now what?

You forgot to list your achievements in Google search, as it was recommended, dude.

I’ve started, they say, <A HREF="http://www.google.com/search?hl=ru&q=QDI+ZX+5+BIOS+update&btnG=Ïîèñê+â+Google" target="_new"> “... recommend you don't update the BIOS…” </A>

Heh..heh.. You continue, and tell us the results.

PS: Don't hesitate to download Disk Manager from Maxtor’s site. I believe it would be the best solution for your old relatively rare motherboard.

OK, you try, do it. As for us, we provide with possible comments.

Believe me, the easiest way is to download the MaxBlast Plus II. Go to <A HREF="http://www.maxtor.com" target="_new">http://www.maxtor.com</A>, on the left hand side click on Product Support, then Software and Utilities, then MaxBlast Plus II. Read the instructions then download to hard drive. After that create the bootable floppy. It's really very easy.

I really do not recommend using any manufacturers boot software if your bios doesn't support the Hard Drive. This can cause MAJOR complications with drive diagnostic software or even software like Norton Systemworks etc...

If you have an open pci slot that has an IRQ available to it, I suggest you Purchase a PROMISE ULTRA 133 CONTROLLER card. You can pick one up online for anywhere from 25-45$, and you will be able to take advantage of speeds that your motherboard IDE controller was not designed for that your new Hard Drive has.

That is a matter of OPINION. If you use the MaxBlast Plus software your BIOS will recognize the HD whether or not the BIOS is up-to-date. Maxtor has diagnostic utilities which work with their drives, and all Norton software is crap anyway.

ok, well i dont have another PCi slot free, but i whant to try out that MaxBlast II. It sais on the site that i am not allowed to use it for Win Xp. I am planning to get Win Xp and have both Win 98 on my Old 20GB (wich is installed now) and Win Xp om my new Slave 60GB. is that ok? will it cause problems?

I searched for a BIOS update on Google but the newest update i found was v1.3 but i already have my BIOS up to v1.3 so i guess i have the newest version and it still can't support the 60GB. Is my only chance the MaxBlast II now?

I think what they are saying is that you should not download and create the floppy using WinXP. So if you are using Win98 everything should be ok. Once the HD has been set up it should be operable with any operating system.

PROBLEM, when i connect my 60GB HD, my comp stops when i it tries to read it in the detecting Primary Slave part. it just stops there, so what can i do if i can't even get far enought to be able to boot from floppy?

I think your BIOS may have a capacity barrier or cylinder limitation. You can get around that if you put the jumper on J46 (i am assuming this drive will be a slave, if it is master then you need jumpers on J50 and J46). In the BIOS make sure you have the auto detect selected for the IDE channel with the new drive.

On the HD between the IDE connector and the power connector, there are 5 sets of jumper pins: J50 J48 J46 J44 J42, put the jumper in the verticle position over the pins in the center.

my HD doesnt have 5 pins slots, it has 4. they are:

PK CS DS
the last slot isnt labeled at all.
the different setting i can choose on those three fumpers are:

Cable select for Master/Slave (Factory default)
Slave (jumper Parking Position)
Master

If you whant me to select it on Slave, thats were i had put it to start with because i already have a Master HD installed.

Something to remember when using MBR utilities like the Maxtor one u speak or even GoBack.... They set your active Partition to a type 44, which can not be recognized by alot of drivecopy/utility software.

Just sending information.

On model's with 4 jumper sets it appears that the set at the extreme right is the capacity limitation jumper. So if the drive is a slave then you only need that jumper. If that dosen't work, what is your Maxtor model number?

That's the HD I was looking at. At the Maxtor web site: Desktop Drives - ATA, then D740X, then click the QuickSpecs (html version). They recommend cable select, which is the second set from the left...so that would be 2 jumpers, but I would try it first with just the limitation jumper.

They also say an 80 wire (40 pin) connector is required. Did an 80 wire ribbon cable come with the new drive? If not, you will need to get one.

Yes i have the 80 wire connector.
when you mean using teh limitation jumper, would i have to have a jumper pin in the Slave AND limitation pins? so 2 jumper connected at the same time?

what about the cable select? would i have to have again 2 jumpers, one for the slave and one for the cable select?
