What happens to a dual gpu card when one core goes bad?

i was just wondering because my friend said he was going to give me his 5970 but he thinks one core may be going bad? will it just function like a 5870?

Why does he think one is going bad? These kind of cards don't tend to have an option to disable crossfire so it would possibly make things unplayable as the render a frame each alternatively.

Perform a few benchmarks and compare the results against expected results from a few review sites - a quick google search will show where to look.

Have him do a benchmark in 3d vantage or similar and compare it to others scores with the same GPU.

If he does know more and has other effect please let us know.

Personally I'm not sure how GPU-Z Deals with Dual Gpu's so I can't help there.
