Purchase opinions?

I am on a budget and would like a gaming pc. It doesnt need to be spectacular performance, but it needs to sufficiently play batman arkham city. I do not require any 3d graphics. I currently have a Pentium D, which barely stands up to older games such as company of heros. I was curious on opinions of what to buy, firstoff stating I do not have much money to spend. I was considering upgrading to just a core 2 quad cpu with corresponding Mobo. would it be sufficient for running this game? would it even be worth the buy in the long run (being a year to 2 years?). Also, I am new to tomshardware, which has saved me many many times from dire outcomes, and i would like to know if i placed this under the right category, although im sure someone will tell me regardless.

Thank you very much in advance

Good luck finding a Core 2 Quad, I see them going on eBay for well over $300. You will need a good GPU and a pretty decent CPU to play Arkham City. I'd recommend a Radeon 7850 and a Core i5-3470. If you post your budget that will help to suggest parts.

i would definitely like to find it under $1000. although if an extra hundred or so makes it more valuable in the long run, i will be willing. I figured it may be hard to find a core 2 still, and i also heard that the newer intel sandy and ivys are cheaper to produce. that being said, intel not amd, i have heard so much better. but as i am newer to byo computers and whatnot, my opinion and knowledge is very limited.

a little too pricey. anywhere i could cut down costs?
I feel the ram is important and i would definately like an ssd for at least the OS. for the os i would get windows 8 since it is so cheap right now

Well for starters you don't need a sound card and you don't need a fan with a CPU that isn't unlocked. You can drop those and save $100. That power supply is decent but Cooler Master is a tier 3 or tier 4 vendor at best. RAM is actually not that important - it's required sure, but that's the last place you want to throw unnecessary money on a build.

I'll suggest something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Mushkin Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($45.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($88.98 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($279.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($22.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $967.89
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Thank you very much, i really appreciate it. So a 800w psu is unnecessary? what applications would a soundcard be useful for then? I also have a dvd rw optical drive laying around, so if bluray is not essential i could cross that off the list. the cpu will supply a heat sink then?
