ac97 disable

if i wanted to add a new sound card to re-place my AC97 on-board, how should i disable it?
Through the bios, or through Windows XP somehow?

You should be able to disable AC97 in the BIOS.

You can disable it from the bios. I can disable it from mine.

However, my dilemma is that I temporarily need to ENable it until I receive my new soundcard, but I can't get it to work, it seems to get detected when I enable it etc but when I play an mp3 in win2000 the graphic equalizer moves for a fraction of a second and then just stops. No sound is heard at all.

can anyone give me any tips on how to get it to work please?
