Suggested Resolution forT.V. to Laptop via VGA

I am trying to connect my Dell Inspiron 1501 (Running XP Home Edition) to my Dynex 36" flat screen T.V. via VGA cable. T.V. continues to flicker randomly even after adjusting resolution multiple times. Can anyone suggest the correct resolution each device should be set to?
