How to deactivate a graphics card?

Is there a way to turn off a discrete graphics card at boot without taking it out? I have a Radeon 7850 with one 6-pin power connector. Would terrible things happen if I unplug the power connector and power on the system with the graphics card still installed? Someone must have done this by accident, right?

Heres a post about it on the forums

Ah, yes. I did see that post. I can't seem to find any options to turn off the discrete graphics in my BIOS (GA-Z77X-D3H), and it's not really the power savings I'm after, but more a compatibility issue since I'm trying to dual boot OS X.

it doesn't really matter if the power is plugged in. You can disable the pcie lanes in bias of your motherboard.

Hm, I can't seem to find that option in my BIOS. Is it called something unintuitive that I might have missed?
